His Eminence Elias Kurban – Metropolitan Archbishop of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of Tripoli & El-Koura in Northern Lebanon – will be the guest of honor Friday-Sunday, September 7-9, when Akron’s St. George Church celebrates three anniversaries:
<>The 90th anniversary of its establishment in 1917 near downtown Akron
<>The 20th anniversary of the consecration in 1987 of its current church home in Copley
<>And the 2000th anniversary of the church’s Antiochian Orthodox Christian Faith.
The three-day celebration events will be held at the St. George Fellowship Hall, 1204 Ridgewood Rd. and will include a traditional Middle Eastern hafli party Friday evening and a grand banquet Saturday evening, highlighted by the celebration of the Pontifical Divine Liturgy Sunday morning starting 10 AM, followed by a farewell brunch.
Metropolitan Kurban, who previously served churches in Cleveland and Boston, will have a reunion with his great nephew, Fr. Michael Corbin, who became Akron St. George’s associate pastor in July. Fr. Louis Mahshie has served as the church’s pastor since 1978 and spear-headed the construction of the current church home.
